US Mum over Extradition of Bhopal Tragedy Accused Anderson
Bhopal gas tragedy verdict is out. Eight people were convicted on Monday, and sent to two years in prison. The tragedy claimed the life of around 20,000 people and is one of the greatest industrial accidents in human history.
The convicts in the case include Chief of Mahindra & Mahindra and former Union Carbide of India Chairman Keshub Mahindra.
However, the US is not keen on reopening the Union Carbide Case. US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia, Robert Blake, said, “I don't expect this verdict to reopen any new inquiries or anything like that. On the contrary, we hope that this is going to help to bring closure".
When asked about a request from India regarding extradition of Warren Anderson, then Chairman of the Union Carbide parent group, Mr. Blake declined to comment.
State Department Spokesperson, Philip Crowley, has said that his country hopes that this case does not affect economic, cultural and political ties between the two countries.
Also, the BJP has connected the court verdict in the case with the Nuclear Liability Bill. The BJP on Monday urged the Government to reconsider the draft legislation challenging that it "shielded" private suppliers.
