International Standard Climbing Wall Inaugurated by Gill
With the hope that the Indian tennis players would excel here and collect the medals when the capital hosted the Commonwealth Games in October, Sports minister MS Gill on Sunday inducted the renovated R K Khanna Stadium.
Having taken a round of the expansive venue Gill said "It will be an excellent venue for not only the coming Commonwealth Games but also for many more tournaments in future. Government has spent Rs 5-6 crore on the preparation and has sent 200 players abroad for exposure. I expect that the results will be seen during the Games”.
He shared his happiness over the appearance of youngsters like Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri. While Somdev was the existing and future optimism for Indian tennis, Yuki was also doing fairly well in addition to seniors like Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, he further added.
Gill guaranteed that the Government would also help the Indian sportspersons in their training for the Asian Games in China later this year and the 2012 London Olympics as well.
A sum of Rs 800 crore has been spent in two-and-a-half years, which is in itself a big contribution by the Government. The sportspersons too are being sent abroad for their training.
Gill also asserted that this level of preparation would continue during the Asian Games and even better training for the 2012 London Games was to be expected.
