Pullout of Elite Athletes from Commonwealth Games Disappoints Sports Minister
Just three months are left for the Commonwealth Games and a number of influential athletes have taken back their names. The decision came as a blow to the Sports Minister M. S. Gill, while Suresh Kalmadi, President of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was not that perturbed. Mr. Gill is distressed on the situation and stated that he does not want an-underperformed team of athletes at such a big event. While, Mr. Kalmadi was of the view that it doesn't make a difference to them if one or two athletes leave out, as a number of other good players are coming to mark the event.
Those who have taken back their names include Usain Bolt (100m & 200 m Olympic Champion), Asafa Powell (Former 100 m World Record Holder), Lleyton Hewitt (Former World No 1 tennis player), Andy Murray (Current World No 4 tennis player), Shelly Ann Fraser (Olympic & World 100 m Champion) and Chris Hoy (Quadruple Olympic gold medallist).
The Sports Minister shared his disappointment by saying that they had been putting great efforts to make Common Wealth Games 2010 a big success. They have made a big stadium for the same and many more arrangements have been made to facilitate the players and to make them compete on a lavishly built structure. So, it's a matter of disgust that some significant athletes like Usain Bolt are not coming.
The skip offs by the athletes have been thought to be made due to their pre-preparations for London Olympics in 2012.
