Southern states beat northern states in family planning

Submitted by Kavita Sharma on Thu, 08/05/2010 - 13:01

Demographers of the country have predicted that India will soon become the most populated country of the world and for the first time in 33 years, Lok Sabha debated on the topic of increasing population.

It has been reviewed that southern states had beaten northern states in family planning by targeting two children and they are paying more attention to the stabilization plan of the country which is facing unpredictable and erratic phases due to rising population.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad clarifies in parliament that government has a target of achieving Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2:1 which means two kids per couple but unable to accomplish it because northern states have not participated in realizing this goal, they fail to maintain the average family size.

It was explained in the population policy of 2000 that if country will successfully achieved TFR of 2:1, then the population will stabilized around 2045.

Adding to this Ghulam Nabi mentioned that except for 14 states in southern with Kerala on the top, all the countries of the country fail to achieve the decided TFR and therefore he claims that if other states will not try to achieve the set targets of TFR then country's population is not going to stabilize even by 2070.

Mentioning some names of states who have successfully accomplished TFR of 2:1 are ; Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab, West Bengal, Delhi, Chandigarh and Pondicherry whereas states like , Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan fail to consummate the targeted TFR and TFR in these states continued to be above four.

Considering the fact that new population policy is on the anvil, minister is seeking help from all the political parties to make the population policy a success.

Sharad Yadav of the JD(U) who is the follower of Sanjay Gandhi's controversial family planning programme during emergency does not hesitate to say that he is the supporter of forced contraception. He said that suggestions are welcomed from each hook and corner to minimize the rising population.

In Parliament, many of the MPs hold a view that couple with single or two kids should be given some incentives whereas Sumitra Mahajan of the BJP disagreed with this notion and said that development would be the best contraceptive to curb the increasing population. He said that all the issues like price rise would be solved if population would get controlled. At last he concluded the discussion that all targets can be achieved only through awareness.
