Return of the angry young man
Back in 1993, Ram Gopal Varma's Gayam had made Jagapathi Rao a star, in which he had a dominating presence, despite a great performance by the antagonist Kota Srinivasa Rao.
That was where Jagapathi Babu’s famous bass voice had made a debut, because till then filmmakers would not be too keen on using his voice and would use dubbing artistes instead. However, with Gayam Jagapathi’s voice became extremely popular. Though he has quite a number of hits in his kitty, Gayam remains close to his heart as his first big hit.
As for Gayam-2, the sequel to the 1993 hit, Jagapathi says that over the years quite a few writers came up with scripts for the sequel, but he was waiting for just the right script, which he got when finally Praveen Sri came up with a convincing script. This one required a heavy budget, and after much search, he met Dharma Kartha who agreed to produce the film.
When Ram Gopal Verma was informed about this, he was extremely pleased with the idea and story of the film. So after 17 years, Jagapathi has reenacted Durga Prasad’s role that won him praises years ago.
