More Compensation Demanded For Victims
The activists representing the Bhopal gas victims, Bhopal Group of Information and Action (BGIA) have urged the Prime Minister to establish a special investigation cell to further look into the probe, related to the Bhopal gas tragedy. It was also pointed out by the group that all the accused have been let off with very light punishments.
It also wants the accused to get more severe punishments. It repeated the assertion of Law Minister, Veerappa Moily who felt that the justice had been buried in this case.
The group also wants the Indian Prime Minister to put pressure on US President to take strict action against Warren Anderson, the former Chairman of Union Carbide.
A court had convicted all the eight accused persons under Section 304(a) for the tragedy due to negligence. But it also granted bail to seven of the accused persons and released them after submitting a bond and a surety amount of Rs 25,000. One of the accused also passed away during the course of the trial.
The former Chairman of Union Carbide, Warren Anderson has already been declared an absconder in this case by the authorities. But legal experts feel that the case has once again demonstrated the weakness of India’s legal system. It is felt that the case has failed to achieve justice for the victims of the tragedy who deserved better justice.
The role of the Indian Government has also received a lot of criticism for its failure to act decisively against Union Carbide, the Company responsible for Bhopal gas tragedy.
