Pongal takes off
The harvest festival of the Tamil people is celebrated as Pongal and that corresponds well with festival Makar Sankranti on Saturday. The Tamil society has arranged for many occasions to greet the big day. The one lakh Tamilian inhabitants in Pune commenced viewing Pongal, a three-day carnival on January 14.
As per Tamil high priest Sundaram Shastri, the subsequent day of the fiesta shall begin before crack of dawn, just as associates are propitiated with 'tarpan.'
At daybreak, the Sun god shall be worshipped and presented turmeric, plantain, sugarcane in addition to the customary 'venu pongal' (spicy rice.) and 'shakkari pongal' (jaggery rice). Turmeric put up with fortunate early stages, whereas sugarcane indicates sweetness. The primary day observed the grounding of 'puran-poli'.
“The subsequent day, a significant day of Pongal, is destined for the real devotion to the Sun God, with the initial harvest of rice cooked in milk that is fetched to a boil in a brass pot skewed in the direction of the east on a little fire set at home," as per Sudha Srinivasan.
