Digvijaya Clarifies on Bhopal Gas Tragedy Involvement

Senior Congress leader, Digvijay Singh has exclaimed that pressure from America, which had been ruling the officials at the gas plant in Bhopal has been the leading factor in the triggering the devastation. He was holding a ministerial post in the Arjun Singh Government in Madhya Pradesh in 1984 when the Bhopal gas tragedy took place.

He clarified that he was unaware of the inner details of the project and he was not in the city when the leakage was witnessed.

Warren Anderson, Chairman of Union Carbide has been identified as one of the key accused in the tragedy. He has been held under the charges of escaping the place in the wake of the tragedy.

The then-District Collector of Bhopal, Moti Singh revealed he was asked by the state’s Chief Secretary to take Anderson to the airport. Anderson took the plane to Delhi airport and flew straight to the US from there. He never returned to face charges.

On Wednesday, the External Affairs Ministry has been facing the fury of the centre as it failed in attain the extradition of Anderson. It clarified that it put in many efforts to extradite the accused between 2003 and 2008.
