Saina Wins Over Sri Lankan Thilini at India Open Grand Prix

The first round of India Open Grand Prix granted an easy victory of top seed Saina Nehwal over Sri Lanka’s Thilini Jayasinghe, on Wednesday. On Thursday, Saina will be show cased taking on India’s Dhanya Nair in the next match.

Despite, an easy win of 21-7, 21-10 by Saina over Thilini, the former wasn’t contended with her performance. She said, “Thilini played well. I am not happy with the way I played but this is only the first round, there is still a lot to come”.

On the other hand, Thilini said in defense that she had to face the world number 6 player in the very first round and thus, had a bad draw. Also, due to this, she never even expected to get a win over her.

As far the other matches of the Grand Prix were concerned, there were five major seeded players who were simply crashed out of the game. Malaysia’s Yunus Alamsyah won over Anup Sridhar by 12-21, 8-2, in the Men’s singles; whereas, in Women’s singles, third seed Aditi Mutatkar went down skirmishing to 14-21, 21-18, 11-21 with Indonesia’s Linda Weni Fanetri.

Before really giving away to the Indonesian, Mutatkar lasted for approximately 53 minutes, but admitted after the match that she still needs to improve upon her strokes and give a little more variation to her style of play.
