Rise in Deaths Recorded Due to Melanoma Cancer
According to statistics, a one-third rise in the number of casualties from skin cancer malignant melanoma has been witnessed in the past decade. Where in 1999 the deaths tolled 127, the Scottish Government said this figure rose to 171 in 2008.
These statistics are a warning for all people to be careful and protect themselves, especially in summers. The record of these figures had been requested by the Conservatives.
Malignant melanoma is atypical, covering almost 10% of the total skin cancer cases, but, with this, it is really hazardous and results in maximum number of deaths. It usually begins from a prevalent mole and then swells to further organs. It is a form of cancerous tumor developing in the skin cells.
The disturbing records highlight a call for families and persons to guard their skin, particularly in hot weather. Also, a correlation has been viewed in the rising malignant melanomas being reported and the use of sun beds by the people.
Tory Public Health Spokeswoman, Nanette Milne MSP said, “The SNP Government now needs to urgently review the current protocol for earlier diagnosis and treatment of cancer in Scotland. Targets must be determined by local clinical need, rather than central government, which are not currently the case”.
