Mumbai getting ready for monsoon
In the year 2005, on July 26th, a havoc wreaked in Mumbai, pushing the Indian Meteorological Department to think upon the situation more seriously. The department made a plan to install more accurate forecasting systems.
Now the time has arrived, monsoons are ready to usher Mumbai once again. But this time it is a bit different as the city will finally get its first state-of-the-art S-band Doppler Weather Radar by July.
The installation work of the high-brow system is on in full force at Navy Nagar’s Archana Building. Dr R V Sharma, Deputy Director General, IMD Mumbai, express that the Doppler radar is crucial for the city as the IMD office in Mumbai has different multi forecasting models and moreover are radars based on which the general forecasts are made.
But soon after the 2005 flood it was made necessary that a sophisticated device which makes predictions in a short span of time must be developed.
The device is crafted with a range of up to 400 km, that can transmit information about a cloud, its distance from land, further its composition, and even minute details like the number and size of water droplets found in a cloud.
