Throwing plastic can cost you Rs 25,000 now
To make people learn the importance of keeping the city clean a special squad has been deployed by the deputy municipal commissioner along with several ward officers who shall look into the matter and shall make sure that they impose a fine of Rs 100 to Rs 5,000 on the people found littering the streets with plastic and thermocol for the first time.
As the pollutants like plastic bags plays a major role in choking the necks of city drains during the monsoon.
The municipal authorities formed three special squads, deployed to vigil the city and searching for the people who indulge and feel pride in disposing the thermocol and plastic bags in drains and on the roads.
According to the municipal commissioner, after this step now it can be hoped that people may act more responsibly and sincerely and stop throwing pollutants which causes water-logging during the monsoon.
Further with the revelations and findings made by the experts had cited that the clogged drains are the major cause of the massive flooding in Mumbai on July 26, 2005 that brought the city to a trauma.
Now onwards, the person caught committing the offence for the second time shall be fined Rs 10,000, and for the third-time offenders the fine shall be Rs 25,000 and could also be sentenced to three months in jail.
During December last year, Mayor Shraddha Jadhav urged the BMC to enforce the ban on plastic bags strictly. To start with, the BMC has commenced no-plastic bags move from its own premises. The civic ward office in Byculla has stopped using the plastic bags in its premises since June 7.
