FM wants details of banks' exposure to aviation
After looking at the situation which IDBI Bank was into because of its alleged overlooking of the prudential lending norms, the finance ministry has asked the banks to open up their disclosures to these companies.
IDBI has invested Rs. 900 crore in the Kingfisher Group without getting the proper clearances. The government has asked that the details should be submitted within a week of the notification, said a senior finance ministry official.
The details, said the officer, would include the total loans that have been sanctioned, the total outstanding amount and also which all companies the money has been invested into.
These details have been asked so that the ministry is able to find out if there are any irregularities in the whole system.
IDBI Bank has failed to get back its money as per the schedule and was forced to stop the sanction of the Rs. 750 crore loan which was to be given to Kingfisher Airlines.
The finance ministry is worried since the situation of the aviation sector is bad and the loans given to them, in most probability, would turn into NPAs.
