Breast Cancer survivors can stay fit with olive oil

According to Rhode Island Medical researchers, breast cancer survivors can lose weight by switching to a diet rich in Olive oil.

Women suffering from breast cancer are at higher risk of re-occurrence of the disease with the weight gain during the treatment.

So, findings of this study are useful for women suffering with the disease.

Researchers examined 1,500 women who were prescribed two diets. One was by the National Cancer Institute which asked these women to eat conventional low fat diet and another diet was a plant-based one rich with olive oil. This was similar to the "Mediterranean diet."

After eight weeks, women were free to choose any one of the diets.

It was found that 80% women who had opted for olive oil-based diet lost more than 5% of their baseline weight as compared to the 31% of women who continued to follow NCI diet.

During the study it was also found that most of the participants preferred higher fat, olive oil food because it tasted better and it was handy and inexpensive.

The study is to be printed in the journal- Women's Health- in the June issue.
