Heavy Rains Disrupts Life in Mumbai

Submitted by Gurpreet Sekhon on Wed, 06/16/2010 - 13:18

Many regions in Mumbai have been water-logged, besides the train services, which are hit badly and the flights are also getting delayed. Heavy and intense rains in the city on Wednesday, has once again thrown the life of the citizens out of gear.

In the areas of Dnyaneshwar Nagar in Thane, a deadly collapse of wall in the hutments left eight workers killed and four other people were wounded seriously. Even in the regions of LBS Marg in Mumbai's Mulund colony, a similar wall crumple took place today left and one person was dead. Three houses were shattered in a landslide that occurred at Chembur Vashi Naka, even though no one was injured.

Since Tuesday, a rainfall of 60.77 mm has already been poured in Mumbai; whereas, 78.6 mm has been recorded in Colaba in the south Mumbai, and 95.0 mm has been witnessed in the suburban of Santa Cruz. These records have been put forward by the Meteorological Department.

Where on one side, the trains were getting late by 10 to 15 minutes, the planes were also landing late due to the reduced visibility from the heavy rains and tough storms. Five planes were forced to be sidetracked to the airports of various other cities.

Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai Commissioner, Swadhin Kshatriya said, "All officers are on high alert. There is some local problem but most of the trains are running. There is a forecast of heavy rains with high tide after 3 PM. We have also carried out survey before rains and identified 700 dangerous building and notice has served for alternative accommodation".
