Group of Ministers may Look at Compensation Offered to Bhopal Tragedy Victims

Submitted by Prathibha Prahlad on Thu, 06/17/2010 - 11:10

The reformed Group of Ministers on the Bhopal tragedy is congregating on Friday. One of the major issues which they might consider is damages to the family members of the casualties.

For a number of sufferers of the Bhopal gas disaster, it has been a never-ending wait for reimbursement.

Remarking on the subject of compensation, Senior Congress Leader and Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ambika Soni said, "There is a need to reachout to those people who have not received adequate compensation...I hope GoM would address all relevant issues".

In the meantime, the Opposition has queried the minimum amount for damages also, saying that the 470 mn Dollars was not enough, considering the extent of the tragedy.

Yogiraj Sharma, ex-Health Director of Madhya Pradesh was able to get hold of four lakh rupees, the maximum payment ever for his bodily and mentally challenged daughter, who was born three months following the gas tragedy.

In sharp comparison to this, Leela Bayee was declined damages for her son who was born three years after the tragedy. Pradeep is 20, but looks 13, which private doctors say might be an outcome of the gas leak.

Leela Bayee says that the court said that he is not entitled to compensation considering that he was born after the calamity.
