Court Concerned about the Fate of Football in India
The Bombay High Court is worried about the condition of the game in India, although the world is in frenzy with the World Cup football excitement.
"See the fate of football in this country. We are not even playing in the world cup. It's a tragedy", a division bench of Justice R. V More and Justice Ferdino Rebello and said while the inquiring public interest litigation (PIL) about Cooperage grounds in south Mumbai.
According to them, India is not even playing in the world cup and it's a tragedy that people are not interested as well. During the discussion on appeal, court made these observations.
The Oval-Cooperage Residents' Association, represented by previous Municipal Commissioner, Jamshed Kanga, filed the PIL challenging former Chief Minister, Sushilkumar Shinde's September 2003 order permitting restructuring of Cooperage grounds.
The Western India Football Association (WIFA) is building a football stadium, luxury restaurant, clubhouse, residential hotel and carrying out several other constructions for commercial use on the ground, which has currently gained the status of heritage.
The petition contended that WIFA could not build a huge football stadium in the middle of a housing area. The PIL also said Cooperage also need fundamental amenities for sanitation and supervising traffic, security and crowd.
