One More under Arrest in Nitin Garg’s Case
In connection with the murder of Indian student, Nitin Garg, homicide Squad detectives made a second arrest in Melbourne, on Friday. The high-profile case had threatened to derail India-Australia ties. The police arrested a
16-year-old teenage suspect from Yarraville. The police claimed that there was no racial motive behind the killing, though; the arrest sent shock waves back home.
Bernie Edwards, Detective Inspector handling the case said, “In our inquiries at this stage we don't believe (Garg's death) was racially motivated”. The teenager was arrested in a Melbourne suburb and was produced before a Children's Court. The teenager was remanded to custody after a brief appearance, and his mother cried over her son’s bad fate.
Nitin Garg was 21 year old when he was stabbed to death in a local park at Footscray West on January 2. He was an accountancy student from Punjab.
External Affairs Minister, S M Krishna described the crime as a 'heinous crime on humanity' and 'an uncivilized brutal attack on innocent Indians'. The crime has been condemned both in New Delhi as well as Canberra.
