CBI Accused Naxals for Train Derailment in Jhangram
Third arrest in the case of train derailment in Jhargram came, as the police arrested Bholanath Mahato of People's Committee Against Police Atrocities on the charges of damaging the rail track in Jhargram, which caused the death of 148 people.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the train disaster is suspecting Naxals behind this disaster and had offered one lakh for the information that could help them locate the three prime suspects- Umakant Mahato of Banksole village, Manoj alias Bapi Mahato of Rasua village and Asit Mahato of Krishnanagar village in West Midnapore district.
Mahato was involved in opening of the pandrol clips (used to fix the rail to the sleeper), which caused the train's derailment.
CID arrested Khagen Mahato and Samir Mahato and while CBI arrested one suspect, Hiralal Mahato, on the charges of involvement in the case, however, all three are evading arrest, since then.
The Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express derailed on May 28 between Sardiha and Khemasuli stations and five of its derailed bogies were rammed by approaching freight train on the another track killing 148 persons.
Criminal Investigation Department of the state police initiated the inquiry, which was later passed on to CBI on June 10.
The PCPA was formed after an assassination attempt was made against Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in November 2008.
