Arjun Singh Breaks His Silence on the Release of Anderson
79-years-old Arjun Singh for the first time broke his silence on the controversial case of the release of the Union Carbide Chief, Warren Anderson in front of Hindustan Times and said that he had “no locus standi” on the matter. The veteran Congressman refused to elaborate any further.
The then Deputy Chief of mission at the US Embassy, Gordon Streeb said, “he immediately contacted the foreign ministry and was assured the government of India will honor its commitment to provide Anderson safe passage in and out of India”.
Ever since the Bhopal verdict came on June 7, there have been cries of foul play by the Government.
The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh reconstituted last month, the high-level ministerial group, originally set up in 2008.
After the first session of the GoM's meeting on Saturday, Chidambaram told reporters,”We discussed all pending issues and options before the government after the trial court judgment. We heard all concerned and reached some tentative conclusions”.
The health care issues of the sufferers of 1984 toxic gas leak will be the agenda of the next meeting of GoM.
The GoM started its meetings on Friday to discuss various issues concerning the world's worst industrial disaster of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.
For the Bhopal Tragedy, the court sentenced only two years of imprisonment for the seven Indian executives.
The toxic gas leak from Union Carbide plant killed over 3,000 people on Dec 2-3, 1984 and left 20,000 seriously infected.
