Pakistan will focus on seven websites for profanity against Muslims
Pakistani authorities have decided to keep an eye on 7 popular websites for material which is considered as offensive for Muslims. They will monitor YouTube, Amazon, MSN, Hotmail and Bing apart from a close watch on Yahoo and Google.
They will block some other less popular 17 sites. Officials said that they will block all those links which appears out of place for Muslims. Pakistan has already initiated blocking of sites by blocking FaceBook in May. They have taken this step after they observed that a competition was hosted by the social network of FaceBook to draw the prophet Muhammad. During this move, Pakistani authorities will closely supervise all the seven sites and they will block individual pages if they found anything offensive.
Khurram Mehran, telecom official said that Pakistan authorities will just block the links without affecting the main website. The authorities have banned FaceBook after 2 weeks, when they observed a page known as Everybody Draw Muhammad. The page showing Draw Muhammad on Facebook glints demonstrations in Pakistan.
Authorities reports that current list of websites which need to be monitored does not include Facebook. They will block several pages from Youtube leaving the main site unaffected. Sometime back in 2007, Pakistan had banned Youtube, which was found containing content which seemed nasty to the Pervez Musharraf government. The ban caused interruption in accessing the site for several hours. Later on, the ban was lifted.
