Fuel Price Hike: Howls from Left & Right

Submitted by Gurpreet Sekhon on Wed, 06/30/2010 - 10:28

Manmohan Singh Government’s decision to hike the prices of petro-products, is seeing dissent and the efforts to convert the July 5 Bharat Bandh, has got a major impetus with approximately the complete Opposition, together with the Left parties and the BJP-led NDA, coming out in its support.

While the Left parties CPM, CPI, RSP and the Forward Bloc had declared their verdict to hold remonstrations across the Country on Monday, BJP, the biggest Opposition party, followed suit a day later, with party President Nitin Gadkari, asking the people to back the July 5 bandh.

However with the RJD-LJP combine in Bihar and BSP repudiating to pool their resources with the Opposition, the pan to project a united picture on the matter suffered a setback.

Officially, they have been bracketed with parties which have comprehended outside support to the UPA Government, but they too are determined to register their complaint of the fuel price hikes, although individually.

While BSP is said to be holding gripe across Uttar Pradesh on July 6, the RJD-LJP coalition has given a call for Bihar bandh on July 10. The Samajwadi Party, however, has ascertained to back the July 5 bandh, being sponsored by the main Opposition parties.

“Check prices or leave the chair (Dam roko ya gaddi chhoro), Price rise affects all communities (Hindu Muslim Sikh Isai, sabke ghar me hai mahangai -- will be the Opposition's slogans during the agitation”, Mr. Sharad Yadav said.
